L'Azur Russian Restaurant in Sheepshead Bay

Last week we set you off on a guessing game of which Sheepshead Bay restaurant was selling its business on Craigslist. Was it sushi? El Greco? A strip club?!

Nope.

Reader “Local Broker” had to go off and spoil the fun with his early – and accurate – answer: “East 14th and Z near the library.” He was, of course, talking about Cafe L’Azur at 2612 East 14th Street. So when we have our eventual meetup, Local Broker will get his reward: a hug… or something.

While the number attached to the Craiglist post did indeed go to L’Azur, an owner named Dimitry denied the whole thing. It’s possible that’s because, minutes before, we were in the restaurant asking him face to face. He denied it then, too, and had no knowledge of any Craigslist post. But when we talked over the phone, he admitted he did know about the post, but didn’t know who put it up or why, and that the business was not for sale.

“We’ve only been open for a year. We’re not selling it,” were his words.

But one reader who is interested in buying the business told us that he called and spoke to an owner as well. Not only did they tell him the business was for sale, but they’ve asked him to come in and take a look around. Curiouser and curiouser…

Whatever the situation, it’s definitely weird. Cafe L’Azur did open about a year ago, replacing a florist who had been there for at least a decade. They renovated the spot inside and out. But – perhaps because of poor media relations – they’re now closing. Maybe. Who knows.

Confused yet? Me too.

Hugs are free. Pizza is not. Don’t be demanding. ;)

Actually, when I went into the place, it did look like it could fit 70 (I didn’t see the backyard, though, which they claim fits an additional 30). It’s basically two rows of tables lining the two, windowless walls. It goes back fairly deep, and probably has about 6 or 7 tables on one side and 8 or 9 on the other (didn’t count, but that’s what it looked like). So yes – it does fit 70ish if you put 5 per table.

Hmm, I thought a good RE salesperson never uses the words “terrible location”. Besides, didn’t this same spot house the Captain’s Quarters restaurant for a very long and successful run?

There was a pizza place there for a number of years. If I remember correctly one of the first organic ones.

I think Captain’s Quarters was there after that.

whats wrong with using those words. if there was a successful place of business here before it was a long time ago. i think in the food industry you either have to be in a prime prime location and have decent product or go anywhere and have an amazing product that everyone wants.
cmon man tell them you are going to give them some advertising on the internet and get a couple of slices and garlic knots. i will pay for the soda.

I think the place is for sale because the food is/was just plain bland. there are already enough better small russian cafes in sheepshead bay/Brighton for people who like that kind of stuff to eat at anyway . I ate there once with some family for an occasion and nobody spoke about it or mentioned the place after that..the food left no impression.
