The photo above shows a large amount of Autumn leaves collected on East 19 Street between Avenue X and Avenue Y. In the late afternoon of Thursday, November 5, 2009 many of the car owners have already moved their vehicles in preparation of the alternate side of the street cleaning rule that prohibits parking from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.
The following picture was taken Friday, November 6, 2009 at about 10:30 a.m., before cars even had a chance to rush into some of the spots. It’s quite apparent that no street cleaning truck came by during the designated hours, because the leaves from the day before are still there.
It is quite a common occurrence to see the streets remain unswept. Meanwhile, residents who need a parking spot are forced to go scrambling or risk a swift ticket slapped on their cars at 8:31 a.m.
Over at The Alternate Side Parking Reader, blogger MJN is busy tracking his/her parking adventures around an even more remote part of New York City — the Rockaways. With the city’s many annoying and nightmarish parking regulations, we could probably turn Sheepshead Bites into a similar site documenting residents’ complaints about how car owners are being penalized for simply owning a vehicle. Fortunately or unfortunately, we have many other things to complain and brag about.
Let’s hear from you, readers: Should the NYC Department of Transportation turn over a new leaf and abolish Alternate Side of the Street Parking rules or would you prefer for them to continue cleaning up (your wallets, that is)?

street cleaning is only a source of income for the city
There’s something to this. Even when the cleaners do the street they leave behind debris. Some days it seems that they don’t come at all.
As they generate income for the city its a practice some would like to see continue. However, in some council districts (such as Fielder’s) whole areas have been exempted.
Maybe if some of Councilman Nelson’s friends started getting tickets……
I hate to say this but home owners are responsible for leaves,
I think responsibility curb side is also on the home owners.
TY Bloombergass for another “bag it in paper plan”.
I saw the sweeper truck on W and 17 street emptying the leaves into a garbage truck.
They did try to clean up after lazy-ass Sheepshead Bay home owners. (majority)
My neighbors don’t know what a broom is and the people that pay a gardner every 2 weeks just blow it into the street.
I can show you pictures of bags of poop on Ave W between 18 and 19 street that is there for days. Home owners have to clean up after apartment dwellers who are above bringing their dogs mess to a garbage.
Even when the brooms do come, they just blow everything around and make even more of a mess.
I have to say most of my neighbors never pick up a broom. My block does not have any street sweeping days and my neighbors with 2 or more cars prefer it that way. I say then let’s get a reduction on our taxes currently earmarked for a service we do not receive.
Clare, I get tired of cleaning after the ignorant swine that populate this area nowadays. Were the street cleaners to actually do the job they are supposed to do I’d have no problem. But since they don’t……..
Littering is against the law and yet it is homeowners that can get fines from the result. Might as well make us responsible for the streets as well.
I’m all for abolishing Alternate Side of the Street parking for residential streets. Keep it on Commercial Streets that have the most traffic and the most garbage.
If home owners don’t clean the area in front of their home that should be a separate issue, but street sweeping on residential streets is just a money generating scam.
i have a parking spot that i pay alot of money for so i dont have to deal with that bs. as far the actual cleaning goes i think it makes more of a mess than there already is.
I agree that street celaning is not perfect but you would not be happy with the condition of the streets were it stopped altogether.
As far as picking up after the pigs in the neighborhood: I’m fortunate enough to have a tree in front of my house that people seem to think is a garbage pail.
I need to post a sign in english, russian, spanish and chinese that says “this is not a garbage pail”.
Frank
If you do that I bet you 10$ people will throw more garbage.
LOL
Arthur…You may be right.
That’s the mentality of our “new” Sheepshead Bay.
Posting a sign on a City tree will get you a fine. DON”T DO IT!
[...] Considering the low traffic and population on Avenue X in that area, the very need for street sweeping is called into question. After all, we’ve seen how ineffective it is anyway. [...]
In Newark they don't just give you a ticket, they tow your car away for the first offense. I just payed $221 to get my car back and nearly had a heart attack when at first I thought it was stolen. I also got a ticket. The street is still dirty. Even if it was clean, I wouldn't support the existence of the service.
