Walgreens Opens on Coney Island Avenue and Avenue W

The Coney Island Avenue Walgreens (at Avenue W) may have opened for business almost a month ago, but they held off on their grand opening until today. After visiting we could see why there was a delay. The event was overloaded (in a good way) with vendors, clowns, soap opera stars, a cappella songsters, snacks, politicians, and the tremendously talented Brooklyn Steppers (oh my!). Get there before the rain, and you may still be able to receive one of the free goodie bags they’ve been giving out. But don’t put anything down for a second – Ray is still fuming over some scoundrel’s successful theft of her potato chips. That thief was a pUTZ!*

*Sheepshead Bites apologizes for any seizures, strokes, or aneurysms caused by our terrible puns. Simultaneously, we deny any responsibility in such an incident.

Oh well, if I had known last night…….

I do see some faces of people I don’t want to run into, like our councilman. I see that Marty was there as well.

Just for the record: it was two snack-sized bags of chips, stolen right from under my nose while I was sniffing out some real news (unlike some people who were drooling over the cake, instead of snapping pictures of thieves). The witness said that she tried to alert me, but I was so engrossed in my fact-checking that the Utz slUtz got away without a trace.

I would have put the chips in my Walgreen’s goodie bag, but they ran out of those valuable red “environment-savers” within minutes of the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

But, in all seriousness, just how did that stiltwalker get there “On-Time” with those legs? Shouldn’t he have asked for a stretch limo?

Does Walgreens sell those giant scissors?

  4. Lisanne!on 01 Oct 2009 at 7:24 pm

Ray, this was supposed to be a “soft” story. Though some investigation is needed as to why I didn’t receive an RVSP invite. Certainly I am as an important a personage as our lovable borough President.

  5. Ray Johnsonon 01 Oct 2009 at 7:24 pm

Those scissors must come from the big corporate store in the sky! The only way to reach them is through the politicians.

  6. Lisanne!on 01 Oct 2009 at 7:27 pm

Which reminds me, did Marty have staff with him to keep him away from the cake? I heard he’s really serious about his weight these days. I wonder if he’s still fun at the dinner table.

  7. Lisanne!on 01 Oct 2009 at 7:28 pm

Those are the scissors used for cutting budgets.

    Really? Wow!

  10. walgreens mgton 01 Oct 2009 at 9:31 pm

yeah, it was an exciting day for Walgreens. every corporate executive came to share the moment with us at store level.

thanks for everyone showing their support.

So does everyone get a chance to see NYC afterwards? It would be a shame not to have that opportunity.

walgreens mgt: I was wondering when you’d show up here! Any estimate of the numbers? Anything you want to add about the event? Feel free… more information is always a good thing.

Btw, dear readers. The man in the ninth picture – and in the photos standing next to Markowitz during the ribbon cutting – is Mr. Walgreen III. I didn’t realize Walgreens was still a family owned company (though I’m sure it’s publicly traded by now).

I was hanging out by the hotdog guy in my car watching stuff going on and I asked the guy on stilts to climb out of my car for a picture. I wanted to get the other clowns in on the gag but I couldn’t run off and leave a running car unattended.

Either way I got some free advertising out of the deal!

  14. Arthur Bon 01 Oct 2009 at 10:54 pm

Oh, Mr Manager, since you’re still reading I have a suggestion.

I keep seeing people leave their bicycles by the doors to the store. Either unattended or actually chained to the traffic cylinders. It’s only a matter of time before someone steals a bicycle. It might be wise to prevent the issue and perhaps ask your superiors if it would be possible to install a bike rack?

It’s official. Arthur B., Reader of Sheepshead Bites, IS A GENIUS!!

  16. Ned Berkeon 01 Oct 2009 at 11:11 pm

Arthur needs his own column: “Arthur Bites”. How ’bout it, Arthur? ;)

  17. Lisanne!on 01 Oct 2009 at 11:24 pm

Yep, I second the idea. Arthur would make good reading.

  18. Arthur Bon 02 Oct 2009 at 12:00 am

I have no idea what I’d write about. I’d end up ranting about pedestrians.

  19. Ray Johnsonon 02 Oct 2009 at 8:34 am

Not that he’s not a genius writer, too. In this instance, though, I was talking about the brilliant idea involving car service, photo opps, clowns, and stiltwalkers. Keep plugging, Arthur.

think its nice that you guys leave all your comments good and bad, we will work on the cashews and the bicycle idea is great idea, thanks for your support!!!!!!!!!

    You do write well.

  22. Arthur Bon 03 Oct 2009 at 8:32 am

    Well, Lisanne, Clare and Ray.

I wrote up my first article last night and sent it to Ned. So you’ll see my true writing style whenever he is done editing it and schedules it.

Since when is the appearance of clowns considered a good thing? Didn’t anybody see that movie, Killer Klowns from Outer Space?

  24. Vito Goldbergon 04 Oct 2009 at 12:26 am

You can’t be serious! Local and boroughwide politicians falling over each other to get in on the grand opening of another drugstore, for a photo op?! And on Ritzy Coney Island Avenue South, yet! I’m sure many thoughful people see the irony in all this! Ideally, drugstores, like medical offices and suppliers, are normally located in neighborhoods where they see, or contain a lot of elderly and sick people, not up and coming areas! Does Walgeens and the like see us that way? Besides that, we should also expect to see many storefronts teaching English as a second language, because the old Brooklynese is certainly becoming a rarity in Sheepshead Bay and the surrounding areas! Another way to get our learned politicians to come out is to paint anything, even vaguely resembling a swatstika ( even if it is not! ) and that is one sure way to get our insidious grafitti vandalism cleaned up, otherwise our mighty local politicians do nothing with it?! PS Our BP is the only honorable one there, and he has been a real blessing to our borough, especially following Howard, and his connected, spouse!
