I spent the day laboring with a number of technical glitches. Some involved problems with the site; others involved problems with my computer. On top of it all, a client of mine gave me a headache about a problem with his site. So, distracted by the woes of a technology-addicted society, I was far too bogged down to remember what is fast becoming one of my favorite features: Open Thread Mondays. So go ahead, and spit out what’s been bugging you, what you’ve been working on, what your computer troubles are. Or better yet, in light of the recent rescue of three people from the cold waters of Sheepshead Bay a week and a half back, answer this question: would you jump into the frigid, dark shallows of Sheepshead Bay? I mean… honestly. Or you can riff about the awful parking situation that led the driver to go in search of Atlantis. Heck, it’s an open thread: jib-jab all you want about whatever you want!

One of the disgusting things that annoy me are the people who pick up their dog poop in a plastic bag only to ditch it under a car or by the sewer. Some nervy walkers stick the bags in little nooks on peoples property.
I am convinced 90% of the slobs live in the apartments in the area and can’t bear the thought of bringing the mess home with them. Kinda of understandable, but, you got a Freaking dog. Take the responsibility along with. TYVM
So all these bags are going into the sewer system, literally dozens a week on my block alone. One day I (with gloves on) picked up 9 bags, Disgusting huh.
Apartment owners should have to supply a disposal unit outside the building so the tenants can do the right thing.
I would pay for photos of the slobs so I could post them in the apartment lobbies.
Kinda like a wall of shame.

One aspect of the troubled economy that gets no real media coverage is that employers are really taking advantage of workers. I scour the job sites daily in search of opportunity. Monster, CareerBuilder, CraigsList all share the same story. Employers are advertising jobs that require education, experience, talent and ability. Such jobs paid respectably 2 years ago. The money now offered for these positions is not only paltry but insulting, particularly to those that have paid for an education. In order to save money, many businesses are eliminating positions and combining a multitude of responsibilities into one low-paying job. Ultimately, employees are performing twice as much as work for much less money now. The overload of responsibilities takes its toll on the employee’s performance in the area that he or she has been educated and trained in. Yet, with such a bleak economic forecast workers are led to feel fortunate to even be employed. Employers are exploiting the fact that there is always somebody willing to work for less. They know this is not a time of choice.

Employers looking at their current bottom line don’t see that they are creating a culture of dissatisfaction in the workplace. The cost of under-appreciating their employees is lack of dedication and loyalty. Although, employees are likely to work hard enough to keep their job, many are resenting the way in which they are treated. The economy will likely take years to turn around. When the job market ultimately does open up, I expect to see a mass exodus of employees looking elsewhere for the opportunities that had been previously denied to them. Employers will likely suffer through a great turnover of workers as job-hoppers will eventually abound. Smarter business owners will be using this down time now to nurture relationships with their employees so they won’t all disappear at the first chance they get.

If I could swim well enough and there was help on its way, I would definitely jump in the bay to help anyone. I wouldn’t even be thinking of the reward of cognac and chocolates to be earned!

But when Congressman Weiner gives me the Good Samaritan award, as he sarcastically joked to Keith Gorman — “You know, with that proclamation, you get double coupons and parking tickets fixed – anything you need with that proclamation!” — it would just reinforce my belief that no good deed goes unpunished.

Yep, being a public hero means having to tolerate public officials making themselves into public embarrassments.

The joke he made to the driver who was rescued was even lamer.

And as for computers, I just got a new one and it’s taken me a week to get it the way I like it. Computer manufacturers should stop putting junk programs in the initial setup that a lot of people don’t want. Personally, I’d rather start with as a clean a registry as possible.

Ned doesn’t have to worry about such things. He uses Linux.

I have a computer glitch that has annoyed me for several weeks. In the middle of surfing the CPU goes crazy. It sounds like a plane is taking off. I open task manager and it shows that the process “iexplore.exe” is running anywhere from 50% to 100%. Everything is at a standstill until the usage drops to 0. It’s extremely annoying. I’ve run my antivirus program (Bit defender), windows defender, malwarebytes, and CCleaner and found nothing. I have IE explorer as my browser and Windows XP. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

I remember this problem occurring with earlier versions of IE. There was a registry fix but I can’t remember it. Best to do a search with the terms “Internet Explorer” CPU and perhaps overclocking. (Though it really isn’t) Or use Firefox, Chrome or K-Meleon.

Problems like that made me give up on IE a long time ago.

My computer is running slow what steps can I do to fix it?

Download a free program called CCleaner and run it to clear out crap you don’t need. Then use its tools to change which programs run at startup (Google them and if they’re not necessary, disable them). Then download Defraggler (also free) and run that.

Beyond that, go to one of the local computer places and see what they can do.

Wow I have never heard of this before, what an interesting spiritual story. It's truly an inspirational and interesting story.
