• Grillin On The Bay - March 27, 2010

This is becoming an all-too-familiar sight in Sheepshead Bay. Reader Lisanne Anderson snapped this photo on the corner of Avenue U and East 14th Street almost a month ago, but it could be on any given day. I’d say this heap o’ trash is actually far tidier than most around the area. Turns out it’s not just city garbage cans that are turning into illegal dumping spots for irresponsible homeowners and businesses. Neighbors are now reporting that they wake up to find other people have dumped non-collectible items in the garbage units outside of their homes and apartment buildings, causing them to receive fines. Sheepshead, it’s time to do something about this – any ideas?

  • I do remember this being a problem on Sheepshead Bay Road some 40+ years back, but not to the extent it is now, especially on Avenue U.

The owners of commercial buildings probably can't understand why a 60 unit apartment house gets free collection while they have to pay for private carting. Perhaps this is a good point. But as private collection is usually done in the dead of night those who live on residential blocks would go nuts if these trucks went down their street collecting trash from apartment houses at 3AM. As it is, I live about 100 feet from a commercial street and I can hear them.

Which in part plays into the difficulty of renting apartments over storefronts.

I have spoken to sanitation administrators about this. They are overwhelmed by the problem. I'm told that they make pickups from the public receptacles every two days. (Excepting Sundays) But it doesn't take long before the garbage is out on the street again.

Allowing for trash pickup of residential waste from these buildings would solve the problem. And the side benefit would be that the pickup from public units could be done less often.

As a 40 yrs resident of Sheepshead Bay I can attest this is nothing new....In fact I took a walk today, down Sheepshead Bay Rd to Plumb Beach and back & noticed there was actually less dog poop on the sidewalk & over flowing garbage than in the past. However, I think this is more due to the change in weather than to any enforcement.

There have NEVER been enough cans down the bay & even if there were they would be filled to over flowing with house-hold trash. The Sanitation Dep't could ticket those landlords who do not have receptacles for their tenants but I don't know if this would change the tenant/landlord culture that has become deep rooted.

Maybe if the Sanitation Dep't would pick-up the household waste, in separate cans from the stores, it would reduce the use of the public cans.

And don't think the Sanitation Dep't is so "distressed" by this problem. It's been going on for longer than most of us are alive and they haven't done a thing to address it.
  • Lisanne: Indeed! But I'm not ready to sell my soul in such a way - yet. Give me a few weeks...
  • BTW, Ned, Anna has hit upon a most clever method of inserting free advertising.
  • I've been on this for years. It happens on a number of shopping streets but Avenue U, especially from Ocean Parkway to Bedford, is the worst. Sanitation knows about this problem, and is distressed by it. But they are not doing much in terms of enforcement.

Going after landlords who aren't providing carting services for residential tenants would be a start. But tenants are afraid to complain to city agencies.

I live near this corner and this is a regular site. It's so f*king hilarious though that the Sanitation Department will sift through your garbage to check if you recycled correctly and ignore something like this.

"If the garbage cops open up the bags and find mail with someone’s address on the envelop or the letter, then they are bagged! Just send them tickets through the mail."

They used to do that. And once people realized what was happening, they simply started cutting out their names and addresses from mail.
  • Wow.... just wow. I'm totally flabbergasted. I can't say for sure, but I'm pretty certain Anna's post is actually spam that's so well masked as a comment that I can't tell. Man, social media PR experts are damn good these days. I think I'll leave it just as a monument to its own deceptive efficiency.
  • It winds me up so much when someone doesn't clear up after their dogs, I walked out of my front door the other day and there was a dog poop literally on my doorstep. How can people be sooooo rude. I have a dog and it is not difficult to pick up, I know carrying a plastic bag of poop is not much fun but there are some great pooper scoopers on the market so there really is not much excuse. I use a Dicky Bag, have a look at www.dickybag.com they really are the best poop scoop on the market.

Look at the color of the bags. Red bags are from two places--medical waste and Chinese markets. Doubt if that is medical waste, So, I figure it is household garbage. If the garbage cops open up the bags and find mail with someone's address on the envelop or the letter, then they are bagged! Just send them tickets through the mail.
  • These garbage cans are filled with household trash, rather than being used by pedestrians passing by. I suspect that the problem lies with landlords on shopping streets, who have to pay for carting. I've noticed that there is never trash at all in front of some of these buildings, and with others, the trash only consists of that generated by the retail tenants, such as food related businesses. Tenants, it appears, are on their own.

BTW, dumping household trash in these receptacles is illegal. Many of the cans contain warnings to that effect. But this will continue as long as renters are unable to dispose of their refuse otherwise.

This is unbelievable. We need to reduce waste and encourage the 3 R's.

The only solution that can work is to eliminate the recycling for business and homes. The garbage should be sorted at the sanitation sites for recycling. Unfortunately, taxes may need to increase to fund this, but on the upside, new jobs will be created.

is it just me or are there lots of dog poop in sheepshead bay streets. i have seen with my owns eyes walking alone ave z at 5pm where a dog owner watches his dog poop and just walks away like theres nothing wrong. is it me or do some people think dog poop just vanishes into thin air.
  • The problem is that there aren't any garbage cans on the streets of Sheepshead Bay. How about BIG or The Sheepshead Bay/Plumb Beach Civic groups ponying up some money and getting garbage cans on the streets? It would make a huge difference.

How about enforcing quality of life laws that are already on the books. The city is eager to go after parking tickets, how about concentrating some efforts on illegal dumping and dog mess too?
