Car Accident on Coyle St in Sheepshead Bay

Accident on Coyle St.

A vehicle looks to have spun out of control at the intersection of Avenue Z and Coyle Avenue. As depicted in the photos there is massive damage to the fence protecting the field, and the car is totaled. The “Jaws Of Life” were used by emergency personnel to remove at least one indivual, who was taken away in a stretcher covered in blood. Witnesses at the scene speculated the driver was drunk, noting that he first hit a car at Avenue Z and Haring Street, then impacted a flatbed truck on Coyle before hitting a final car and flinging into the field. The driver was alone in the car. We’ll update you as more information becomes available.

This tragic news came in just in time to make me cancel going outside in this weather.

They keep talking about dangerous winds. That’s enough to keep indoors. I was almost killed once by a falling tree during a hurricane. (On Avenue Y, I think it was 1986) That was quite enough for me. I don’t go out with winds over 40 MPH unless its imperative.

OMG.. that looks unbearably painful. I can’t even imagine what would happened to make a car end up in that position. Hopefully the driver is all right.

The driver was my uncle, he survived the accident but is in pretty bad shape and is in for many more reconstructive surgeries to come. He can’t remember anything after hitting the first car. After seeing theses pictures I can’t believe they got him out of there in one piece.

The road condition were horrible that day.

You know, the weather WAS crappy. But the road conditions were hardly that bad. At the time of the accident the rain was only coming down as a light drizzle.

He hit a car on Haring and Z first, I have a picture of that, which I’d classify as a fender bender. Then somehow he got from there, to Coyle and Z where he hit a flatbed truck before careening into the fence.

That’s approx the length of a football field. How does someone black out from a minor fender bender? Something doesn’t add up. Not drinking you say? Well, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt, there is no evidence that he was.

I hope you guys can come back and update us on his situation and on what happened, if he ever remembers.

Just a short update, he’s going in for surgery again today to cement his L4 vertabrae. His femur is broken in three places and they placed a rod inside his leg on Friday evening. They’ve done a barrage of tests and ruled out intoxication, poisoning and stroke as the cause of the blackout.

He definitely wasn’t drunk, he hasn’t had a single drink in the 25 years I can remember and he was working delivering pizzas at the time of the accident. What we can piece together from what he remembers and witness accounts is that his brakes went out and he hit his head on the steering wheel after striking the first vehicle. His brakes had been giving him problems for a while now and the car obviously wasn’t fit to drive. The remaining seconds after the initial impact came as a result of him trying to operate the car with no brakes and major head trauma.

    Mike,

Thank you so much for updating us. I hope he has a full recovery and I’m glad his injuries weren’t more serious.

What I want to know is how the heck did he fit between the tree and the light pole and go into the field? That in itself is a miracle. Do you have any idea how tight a fit that is? Well, i am glad he will live.
