Construction is ongoing on a new restaurant on Sheepshead Bay Road near Emmons Avenue. Across the street from El Greco and wedged between Assemblyman Cymbrowitz’s office and Garden Bay Cafe, the location was previously used by the Armenian cafe as an expansion of its restaurant and an outdoor seating area. So we got to thinking they were renovating. But a flustered employee confirmed that the construction is a new and different establishment, not to be associated with Garden Bay. It’s always great to see new places to eat open up in the area and it appears as if the building going up has at least two levels. Maybe the psychic can clue us in!

Oh, nearly forgot about the psychic.
Interesting, I was shooting there today. It was a co-incidence, as I haven’t looked at this site until now. But I noticed the storefront next to what used to be a used car lot was vacant, and I can’t help but wonder whether that building too will be demolished. I suspect that these buildings date from the tuen of the last century, at which time Sheepshead Bay Road from Avenue Z east and south was called Shore Road. Don’t ask me why, it was Sheepshead Bay Road previous to that time, and after a short period the name was restored.
It’s possible that photos of this stretch from around 1910 exist, and perhaps have even been published somewhere. Some of the buildings on that block may still look much the same.
