Construction at the Lowe’s Home Improvement Kings Plaza location is underway. Apparently, contractors felt the first thing the building needed was walls. Perhaps this is a new, graffiti-friendly approach to construction that we didn’t know about before, but it sure seems strange to us.

I guess they could have started with the roof first. It would have kept them dry while the rest of the building was being built.

It looks like the only things holding it place are those two pieces of wood. If two construction people sneeze at the same time it just might come tumbling down.

The reason the wall goes up first is because it is precast concrete. It is formed off location and lifted into place. What you cant see from the street is the plates on the back side of the wall where the steel will be welded to. If I am not mistaken, it is more cost effective to do it this way. As we only deal with the steel on the job, I couldn’t tell you when the building will be complete, but we will be there until January. If you want to see the job, you can get a good view from the edge of the parking garage.

On this project the pre-cast walls act as bearing walls. The walls are stood up first before our friends at McLo install the interior steel structure and connect it to the walls. This allows the owner to reduce some of the redundant structural components of the building recognizing a costs savings and schedule reduction. Also some of the larger panels on this project weigh well over 15 tons, installing these first makes it easier to coordinate site safety before many other trades have arrived.

The panels are braced with modified steel beams which are connected to a concrete footing. I can assure you these, “two pieces of wood” will keep the panels secure regardless of the amount of simultaneous sneezes.

The project is expected to complete early 2010.

Does anyone know when this lowes location will be hiring I contacted the other lowes home improvement stores but they told me they don’t have any info as yet, that I can fill out an online application. Then there was someone else who told me they may set up trailers for people to fill out app. I’m unfortunately unemployed and desperately looking for employment, if anyone has any info in regards to this please let me know. I would appreciate it.

    Thanks
