[...] Located just off Sheepshead Bay Road — just storefronts away from a Maimonides Medical Center satellite clinic and within walking distance of quite a few medical and dental complexes, — and with an illuminated sign advertising 50% off all in-stock drugs, the pharmacy is probably expecting to get customers looking to fill their prescriptions, before they spot the many other pharmacies nearby.
It's a shame how little good architecture exists in the bay. Overall in the building industry, the mantra now is to build cheap and to build to last 50 years. Back in the day, buildings were built to last forever, that's why money was spent on detailing.

It's architecture. And history. St Mark can trace itself back to the 1860s, when services were held in a house on what is now East 13th Street near Z. At that time the only other church nearby was the Methodist on Ocean. The present building dates from 1931. It's considered well designed architecture.

We should respect history, not destroy it. At any rate, the principle behind this country is that anyone is free to hold whatever beliefs are sacred to them, without fear of recrimination. In fact, it is the very reason for the founding of Gravesend. The original settlers were Anabaptists driven out of Massachusetts by the Puritans. The Gravesend colony championed true religious freedom, inviting Quakers and other disenfranchised groups to settle there.

The practice of religion is fine as long as those involved recognize that they have no right to expect others to live as they do.

Lisanne, that's only a loss for those of you that care about religion and churches. I'm of the solid opinion that every Church, Mosque and Temple could be razed to rubble tomorrow and it would only improve the area aesthetically and otherwise.

*chews on his vitriol*

Yes, I've seen that as well, especially at night. I found that somewhat surprising at first, but it has occurred repeatedly at that location.

The build owner does not keep that street clean.
Just walk by and you'll see the trash all over.

My understanding that anything above 4 stories was a high rise. Which certainly does include buildings that vary greatly in height.

Consider this. Before the building on the corner of East 17th and Z was built the St Mark tower was visible south of that location on Avenue Z. From an aesthetic viewpoint that's a loss.

But this is nothing new. Along Ocean Avenue are apartment buildings that rival the height of those on East 17th that date back to the late 1920s.

Again, I try to keep some sense of perspective here.

Ahem. ::assumes teacher voice:: Well, now, children... the answer I have received from the professional is, eh, not very likely to end, er, um, this debate. I quote:

"There are several conflicting definitions, but it seems that it generally refers to buildings that are three stories or less. A few alternative definitions I found are at http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081024072812AA86M3j."

Local, I've seen your definition elsewhere as well. From here on in, if it has an elevator - no matter how many stories it is, I'm calling it a high-rise. If not, it's a low-rise. Chances are, everything from now on will be a high-rise. That is, unless someone can offer another term altogether so I can avoid repeating "building", "construction", and "property" - which is probably why I started using "low-rise" and "high-rise" anyway.
