Bay Currents Burns in Sheepshead Bay

Looks like someone doesn’t care for independent media in Sheepshead Bay. We spotted this Bay Currents newspaper bin melted down by the B49 bus stop on Sheepshead Bay Road and East 16th Street. It’s pretty disgusting that some jerk would go and do this, especially to one of the area’s few news outlets not owned by a massive corporation (we’re looking at you, Bay News). After the disappearance of the Bay Currents bin outside of the train station more than a year ago, it appears as if the little newspaper that could has few high trafficked distribution points left. And it really sucks, because these things cost a lot of money – and that’s on top of already high print prices. It’s a time like this we’re glad we’re digital.

Still, one has to admire the resourcefulness of Sheepshead’s residents. Rather than let the bin sit there, a charred blue piece of junk, area commuters have turned the newspaper bin into a much needed trash bin. Let’s hope the Department of Sanitation cleans this mess up.

I don’t think I’ve ever read Bay Currents. I guess I’ll have to find a still usable kiosk and grab a copy.

I feel terrible about this omission. All of us should read our local media.

It’s sad for the Bay Currents that the kiosk was put on fire. Melting plastic is also emits toxic fumes. At least we can still read it on the internet at: http://www.baycurrents.net/

Why assume it was a vendetta against the Bay Currents? Most likely it was just some jackass looking to do a bit of vandalism.

A commuting blog based in Greenpoint chronicled a Metro paper box at the White Plains train station that suffered a similar fate as a trash can. Though it doesn’t appear arson and mutilation was involved…

Title: Free concerts in the parks may be a memory
One trademark of summer is an event outside with nature. Most of the out door concerts are in the summer. The Seaside Asser Levy Park free concerts are under the stars, with a sea breeze and sitting on grass and with trees around you. Whole families picnic there. Many singles have met and married from the experience.
They may all be history if Borough President Marty Markowitz has his way. The only grass park in Brighton may be a building and good bye to some oxygen. The park has had no improvements in 31 years. Every one has to walk through a hole in the fence, broken benches, rocks, puddles, few new water fountains, phones, bathrooms and poor lighting.
Every one has to stay at the perimeter, as most of the seats are for sponsors, there almost always half full and not used. The lighting equipment is in the dead center and blocks the main view. The portable toilets have a better view than most seats. They should have been moved back.
There are only 2 main aisles. There are no fire lanes as firemen watch the concert and don’t issue a ticket. If someone was sick or there was a fire near the aisle near the bathroom, an ambulance or a stretcher could never get through. There would be a stampede.
At the end of the concert there are hundreds of program books listing all the concerts and their bio. They are not given out but thrown out.
There are plans to build a theatre, use 64 million dollars and charge $60 a concert. The park held over 15,000 listeners. The theatre will only hold 5,000 and
The admission fee will hurt the lower incomes and even if sold out
10,000 people less will be able to enjoy the concerts weekly.
This could spread to the other concert venues in Brooklyn like Prospect Park and Wingate. Many times they tried to sell parts of Central Park off and the community stopped it. Years ago who thought you would have to pay for tv (cable), radio (satellite) or bottled water. There are over 7,000 petition signatures against it. All concerned should write the borough president, officials and the news papers.

Whether it's a random vandalism act or an attack on Bay Currents, it's still very sad. It's rather unfortunate that some people don't care about the community, and take out their rage at the expense of others — in this case, the expense of the struggling Bay Currents.
