This beautiful shot of the Sheepshead Bay Marina was taken by Nimo Photography via Flickr. Look a little too good to be true? That’s because Nimo, like me, is a big fan of HDR (High Dynamic Range) photograpy, a special kind of photography that uses digital processes to capture light and color ranges from multiple exposures of the same images. That allows you to capture shades that a normal photo can’t display. It’s really cool! Check out more of Nimo’s photos for other great examples of this technique.

Update: Looks like we made a BIG mistake! The photo above is actually of a Connecticut marina, not Sheepshead Bay! Apparently Nimo gets around. So, to make up for our boo-boo, we’re giving you an additional photo of the day – the photo we intended to use. This one actually is of Sheepshead Bay:

Not only did HDR enhance the color it must have enhanced Sheepshead Bay. Unless someone built a large marina in SHB last night I doubt this was anywhere near SHB.

You’re right, Bill! It appears I scheduled the wrong photo. The one above is actually of a Connecticut marina. I’ve now added another photo of the Sheepshead marina, so you get two for the price of one.

Thanks for pointing out my incompetence. ;P.

HDR can make an ordinary photograph pop with excitement. I’ve used it to enhance photos taken on overcast days and have saved otherwise unusable ones. Programs such as Dynamic Photo HDR give you a lot of control over the outcome. The latest version is $55. There is a Photoshop plugin which costs $16, which is a stripped down version that simulates true HDR.

I’ve also achieved HDR like effects using local equalization. The sharpening effect is interesting, and it produces less noise than HDR. Corel Photo-Paint had a excellent local equalization filter, but that product is no longer made. I still use one of the last versions they released.

I take it that HDR is like rose colored glasses. Or the legal version of LSD.

I was wondering about that picture, but figured that there were parts of Sheepshead Bay that I had never been to, so I took it for what it was presented as…Anyway, as it turns out, the quiet, sleepytown feel of the second picture suits me much better.

HDR is great and the water reflections are fantastical. Yet Panorama serves the bay quite well.
