After Coney Island’s Totonno’s Pizzeria burned down in March, we were devastated by the loss of a legendary pizzeria near our ‘hood. Now local pie-hunters are taking one more hit, as another celebrated dough tosser near our borders raises its prices to damn-near-unaffordable.

Di Fara Pizzeria (1424 Avenue J) in Midwood will now charge $5 for a regular slice, $25 for plain pies, $30 for square pies and special round pies, and $35 for special square pies. Additionally, the joint will be closed on Tuesdays as well as Mondays.

So how ’bout it, Sheepshead Bay. Would you pay $5 for a slice?

Can we not resort to trashing any Brooklyn Pizza joint?

We’re the Capital of Pizza and thats something to be proud of! We all have slices we like and don’t. If enough people are willing to pay 5$ for a DiFara’s slice that he’s able to stay open then Mazel’tov to the guy.

His slices are a Brooklyn institution. The same can be said of Grimaldis and L&B Spumoni Gardens!

According to Serious Eats Tottonnos is supposed to re-open in July after renovations. If you search around their blog I’m sure you’ll find the post. I’m typing this from my iPhone so it’s not as easy to search and link but come to think of it the post might have said late June.

If Im sent to coney I’ll drive past and see what’s up!

I forgot the new iPhone OS had copy paste! There you go, Totonnos should be open by the end of the month, hopefully!

Holy Crap! $5 for a slice of pizza? That’s nuckin’ futz! Pizza is supposed to be a cheap meal.
    Fargin’ bastages!!!

$5 seems like a lot, but this is DiFara pizza we’re talking about. It’s not some crap like you get in the Bay.

Eating DiFara pizza is akin to a religious experience!

Wait, wait, hold on, here. No, no Brooklyn Q, you did not just say that!

I am not going to stand by and listen to this. I do like DiFara’s although I have my complaints…that’s why I haven’t done a review…but, no way you did not just put down our pizza shops.

A Pizza Blogger from Maryland drove all the way up here to sample DiFara’s.

I would not pay $5 for a slice of pizza. The most I have paid was $4 and that was in a pizza joint on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. I got a slice with two toppings, sausage and peppers, or else it would have been $3.

Now that was the Upper East Side where rents are astronomical. I don’t care how great a pizza is, I would not consider paying $5 for a slice.

You people can’t be serious! If I want a slice of the best pizza around, I schlep the four miles, back to my old stomping grounds in beautiful Bensonhurst.
There on the corner of 18th Avenue and 64th street,
I indulge in a slice of J & V pizza. A neighborhood instution for over fifty years. Simply the best, in a field of many good family owned pizzeria’s!

One of my favorite plain jane slice places in Brooklyn is Trio Pizza on Ave U between 19th and 20th. Lucky me I work for the car service around the corner.

I’m going to have to speak out of turn and be a bit of a Blasphemer for a moment but an honorable mention goes out to a pizza place in queens.

    http://www.yelp.com/biz/new-park-pizzeria-howard-beach

New Park. Wow. Their slices have a really really sweet and tangy sauce. The best word to describe it is bright. They use a generous amount of cheese too.

One of the only other places that had pizza like that was Luigi’s on Hillel Pl by Brooklyn College, but the last time I tried their slice it was nothing like the pizza I had there years ago.

Anyway, back to DiFaras. I could not justify paying 5$ for a slice regularly. But it certainly qualifies as a rare treat. My favorite thing about his pizza is the buffalo mozzarella.

Religious experience, my @$$. I’ve had better pizza than DiFara’s…and weren’t they closed last year for health violations? Talk about seedy AND mediocre.

would i pay 5 dollars for pizza no. i don’t care how good it is. 5 dollars is enough to feed me for a day granted i go out and buy my own food. but then again we have people who spend much more for a single roll, or even cut, of sushi.

eh. i’d pay 5 bucks just to try it. but i wouldn’t stop by and grab a bite after school or when i’m hanging out. decisions like this only encourage other businesses to overprice their goods as well.
