In March, we told you about the No Sushi sign in the window at Wheeler’s Bar.
Well, Wheeler’s recently replaced the neon pink sign with a smaller plain one. The bartender on duty told us that the old sign had gotten a little old and had to be replaced. She assured us that although the sign has been replaced with one that is less prominent, the joke is still the same — just not as big.

Okay, I’m gonna be honest here… If a sign saying “No Sushi” is a joke, I’m just not getting it. I hope the Guiness and Bass signs aren’t jokes also, ‘coz those are some quality refreshments whose presence shouldn’t be joked about.
Now if the “No Sushi” sign was hanging on an actual sushi bar, well now THAT would be funny. A bar such as Wheeler’s having a sign saying “No Alcohol” would be downright hysterical! But then again, I don’t get out much so what do I know?
I suppose I can stretch the imagination a bit and assume for a moment that the sign means “No Sushi Welcome Here.” However, that could possibly be construed as racist towards the Japanese which wouldn’t be right at all. The Japanese should be welcome anywhere they can drink good quality European beer since their own can be downright gag-inducing.
So, in the end I’m still confused and welcome explanations, therapy, meds or anything else that might help me escape this rubber room.
Anthony: You’ve definitely been out of Sheepshead for a long time. Within a 2 block radius there are more than 7 sushi joints. That was the last time I counted – which was a little over a year ago. I believe about 4 or 5 of those are within a 1 block radius. That includes one across the street and one a few storefronts over. So the sign is a little nod to those looking for a decent place to eat for the sushi’d out.
Aaaaahhh! Suddenly it all makes sense. Regional humor, I love it! Thanx for clarifying that for me. Thank God this is the only time I’ve made a jackass out of myself, haha.
Did someone say “a decent place to eat”?
Awesome and reasonable food! And I love Jimmy!
I just ADORE the sign. It makes me laugh every time I pass the road on the B49 and see the gazillion Sushi spots and one finally declaring “No sushi”…lol
I cannot believe this is true!
