It appears as if the exterior work on the Walgreens going up on Coney Island Avenue and Avenue W is almost done. Construction started about six months ago, notes Lisanne Anderson, who shot the above photo, and looks as if it may open sometime mid-summer.
This will be Walgreens’ fifth location in the area. Last June, they bought out Morris’ Drug Store on East 17th Street, where they expanded the store last month by removing the wall separating it from the next storefront, which is part of the same building. There is also a branch on the corner of Kings Highway and Coney Island Avenue, in the building that formerly housed the Kingsway Theater, and another branch at Brighton Beach Avenue at the intersection of Coney Island Avenue. Their branch at West 5th Street and Neptune Avenue was probably their only Brooklyn store previously, having been there at least since the late seventies, if not earlier.
Thanks to Lisanne for the information.

I can’t wait for this place to be done. Finally a Walgreens with a parking lot. I can get my Shampoo and Soda and Spaghetti in a can without looking for parking after work!
too many crappy stores are going up and not enough good restaurants.
There was a drug store on the north side of Avenue W until sometime in 2007. Goodyear Pharmacy had been around since the 70s, and replaced a earlier drug store whose name escapes me. That one had probably started in the 1940s. Interesting that they closed within a year of the sale of the property where the Walgreen’s is being built. The building that was there previously was demolished a few months after they closed.
I actually did the lease on this new walgreens space. it took 3 1/2 years to get it done. was a very difficult deal, lots of family members involved that didnt like each other so much. one side of the family sold to the other then leased it to a preferred walgreens developer that leased it to walgreens. very hard deal that we got done.
I really miss Morris Discount. Those stores had an an amazing amount of stuff in them for sale!
this will be walgreens’ 7000th store– all of walgreens corporate executives from chicago will be in town ’til opening day, which should be october 1st.
the location is perfect is great, and it will serve as one of the very few walgreens in brooklyn with a parking lot.
October 1′st really? I need to wait that long for a parking spot to buy toilet paper?
Can’t you guys open any faster!
lol, it may open before the desired date depending how fast everything is set up with shelve setups and merchandise setup.
patience!
Are you guys also putting up a 6th location with a parking lot by Ave U and Coyle?
What’s the hiring situation like? Will you guys be hiring people from the community? When should people apply? Will you have a weekend or week set aside (with notice) for an “application event” where people can come and be interviewed same day?
It’s becoming very attractive, I must say. A piece of suburban architecture in Brooklyn. I should take another picture.
if that’s the location at the corner of Bragg and Avenue U, then yes, there will be a Walgreens location slated to open at the end of this year, or early next year.
applicants can apply via walrgeens.com, not sure if that location is available just yet, but one can try. you should contact either the walgreens in brighton beach, or the one on kings hwy for additional information about whether hiring is being done yet. some positions will be limited as employees will be transferred in from other walgreens locations as well.
there’s no application event for new walgreens. and hiring is based on what applications are pulled from the ‘pool’, which is not limited to community residents.
lisanne- go ahead and take a few shots of the location as it will be grand for walgreens’ 7000th location. it’s a major milestone for the company.
I just put one up on Saturday. If I can get a better shot I’ll replace it.
It looks great. And it doesn’t clash at all with its surroundings. In Brooklyn, because there is such a variety of architectural stylings, even on commercial strips that in itself is an achievement.
setup date for this walgreens location has moved up- so it should be open about two weeks before the Oct. 1st date, as I originally posted. Shelving setup will be worked on throughout this week ’til the actually merchandise arrives, which will take about a week to get everything in, as the first set of deliveries always do not meet each and every item the store should carry.
keep an eye out…
Here’s an exterior shot of Walgreen’s from last Friday that I took.
The sky to the west has been terrible for weeks. This is about as good as I have been able to get.

store is scheduled to open this friday – september 4th, 2009. enjoy!
YAY!
Hey. I’ve got a question.
Why did you guys decide to leave that square of dirt (which I presume you’ll eventually landscape or put grass on) in the parking lot? You could have fit space for at least 4 more cars, maybe 2 if you still put the sign in that corner.
Might I suggest you guys put a sturdy bench over there for people waiting for the bus? I’m sure it would be a great help to any parents who use the bus after the pick up their kids from the Daycare center and for your customers waiting for the bus with their bags full of Walgreens products!
i don’t know anything about the designs of the store, but the whole bench thing would have to go through MTA & NYDOT, not walgreens.
I wasn’t suggesting a bench by the bus stop, of course thats the MTA. I was talking about that square piece of land that as of yesterday has a few rows of shrubbery landscaped on it.
OH YAY! I love Walgreen’s! I’m definitely going by there this Friday.
It’s really beautiful now. I notice that the ceiling is impressively high. It’s definitely going to be a comfortable place to shop.
I took a shot at 2AM last night.

I stopped by today. It was quiet, though they seemed a little bit of first day jitters. The store was practically devoid of customers, though it was only a little after 9AM.
I hope we are told about any official store launching event if it occurs.
it will occur, the Walgreens CEO, Greg Wasson, will be visiting any day now between now and October 1st for it’s official grand opening, and to tour the store. i think it might be the week of sept. 28th… stay tuned for updates.
sales note for new store: outstanding first day! final numbers will be posted later on today for both pharmacy and front-end.
Please do.
I always wanted to do event planning but with the companies I worked for it was the clients that prepared the events we participated in. I was stuck writing letters of apology because one of our directors couldn’t make a meeting. Really exciting-yawn.
Business should be much better after the Labor Day weekend.
I stopped by the store around 6pm and it was doing pretty brisk business. People were going in and out, I got smiles from the employees, except for that one Assistant Manager who looked really flustered. Poor guy, I wonder what had him so riled up.
Some of the dairy items in the fridge were already sold out, cheeses mostly, so thats good I think! You guys had the AXE Shower Lufa! I’ve been looking for that thing everywhere! I ganked it immediately!
When I finally got the the register it was pretty busy! Thankfully you had 3 registers open. I hope you guys keep that up. The Walgreens on Kings Highway and Coney almost always has no more then 2 registers up even on Friday Afternoons. Friday Afternoon is the Shabbos rush! Good Job!
the 7000th store’s first day did about $9k (front-end), which is pretty good for a first day, but the real numbers will show as the store is opened for about 6 months, giving everyone a chance to know that Walgreens is here.
the Kings Highway & Coney Island Ave store is quite busy considering they don’t have a parking lot, and they keep Duane Reade completely empty, lmao!
Stay tuned… and enjoy!
