For the past couple of months, there’s been a new coffee and newspaper store operating at 2321 Avenue X. It’s an interesting little community store with an even more interesting owner. Without even knowing me or that I was there spying out his merchandise for my research, he treated me as if I was a gift sent from the heavens.
He opened this little shop to fill the spot of a community budget store like the ones from his native land. So happy to bring the concept of the dukan to Sheepshead Bay is he, that he displays a framed sign with the word written in other languages. He explained that this particular word is unique, because it is the same in so many languages.
If you’re in the area, you might like to stop by and welcome him to our community. I can imagine he gets a little lonely on Avenue X — it being somewhat of a stepbrother to Avenues Y and Z. While you’re there you can buy a soda or whatever else in his ‘inventory’ catches your fancy.

Avenue X is a rather forgotten little oasis of stores between Ocean Avenue and Bedford Avenue. Some are rather unique and interesting. If Pinto Novelty is still there it’s worth a look. So is the luncheonette on East 23rd Street, which looks so cute from the outside.
