An informal conversation with a man in a white chef’s suit on a smoking break outside of Cherry Hill Restaurant and Market led us to believe that the place is opening for business on Monday, May 4, 2009. This means that the stop work orders and zoning issues are getting too complicated for us to follow.

The signs posted in the window indicate that they are still hiring for the long-awaited jobs, but numerous calls to the number listed tell us otherwise. No one was available to tell us any information about the jobs, so we can’t tell you how much the positions are paying or if there are any benefits and a union. So, if these jobs meets your requirement and you don’t mind getting caught in the endless call-back-laters, go ahead and call (718) 616-1902.

The lack of transparency about the hiring process makes us think that the jobs are starting at close to minimum wage and hiring is happening from ‘within’. At the “open” house meeting in March, management said that not even the florist position is paying close to $20 an hour.

So for all those people who say that Cherry Hill will infuse Sheepshead Bay with jobs — there you have it. Maybe those of you who are eagerly awaiting the influx of economy-boosting paychecks, will fill us in as to why we’re crossing our fingers.

I bet they pay cash and have illegal employees.

I was there last Saturday. It’s a nice-looking place. I bought a half of a pound of tuna, which was okay-tasting, nothing special, and the most horrific carot salad. It was not the usual. It contained carots and an awful…I’m not sure what to call it. I guess dressing. It was clear and tasted like floor-cleaner. One bite and it was in the garbage. My mother had coffee and a cheese danish, which she said was ok.
I also bought which cherries. Expensive, but good.

They have a bakery with beautiful cakes.

I’ll give it a try again.

I stopped by there on Saturday and asked a guy who was sitting in the store and saw me peeking in the window..he said they were opening on Tuesday (today).

They purchased some of their meat from Glick’s butcher who recently closed. This is a bad omen. Dog food anyone?

    So did it open?

Nice store with lots and I do mean LOTS of organic stuff and Middle Eastern and Kosher and, of course, Russian varieties of EVERYTHING!!!

They only hire Russians and Eastern Europeans and, of course, illegals (to do the produce).

English speaking is *not* a requirement for hire, apparently.

    Go figure….

    Hotgreenwasbi,

I speak Englsih and Cherry Hill hired me. My job is to put organic stickers on non-organic produce.

Thanks for shopping with us. Please be sure to visit next time.

PS. Let me know if you need help with your resume.

    Alex

Are you serious? Are you really admitting to us that you’ve been hired to mis-label product and lie to consumers? Or was that a joke?

As for Cherry Hill I’ve been in there twice and something has really freaked me out. They don’t seem to have any apple juice in the normal sizes from the regular brands. They have a crapload of other juices but apple juice is missing.

They sell croissants. But they wont butter them!

    Arthur,

I am being sarcastic. My post is related to an ingorant post that hotgreenwasabi posted. I hate people who are all into moronic stereotypes.

Oh. Well I hate to admit it but he’s not to far off. They were giving me dirty looks till I spoke Russian.

I don’t know about that. I’ve definitely gotten dirty looks – and worse – from staffers at some of the Russian restaurants, but I never got it at Cherry Hill or – for that matter – any of the other Russian grocery stores (which I visit often). True, I haven’t bought anything at Cherry Hill yet, so I haven’t dealt with a cashier. But I’m not Russian and I’ve noticed plenty of other non-Russians there and everyone seems to be treated fine. Actually, last night I looked on while an older non-Russian woman gleefully looked over the Russian candies and was asking the Russian staffer about them. She was more than courteous and helpful. It was kinda… I dunno… heartwarming or something.

    A perfect example of YMMV.

  14. Ned Berkeon 23 Jul 2009 at 5:27 pm

    What is that?

  15. Ray Johnsonon 23 Jul 2009 at 5:46 pm

‘your mileage may vary’, ‘you make me vomit’
The urban dictionary has some other not-so-relevant meanings also listed.

  16. Arthur Bon 23 Jul 2009 at 6:38 pm

Your Mileage My Vary is the correct meaning.

Basically, It means everyone has unique experiences. To quote Obi-Wan: “From a certain point of view.”

It’ also means that each of us has been there at separate times and we all look different. They we were treated simply varies depending who we ran into, every person is different.

All those deserts did look oh so yummy.
