These newspaper towers were seen on Sheepshead Bay Road between Voorhies Ave and Shore Parkway. One of them was leaning so precariously that it looked like an accident waiting to happen. It’s a good thing it was attached by a chain — or maybe if it wasn’t attached by a chain, someone could do us a favor and cart it off.

Are we so in need of these free papers, which are mainly advertising, that our sidewalks have to be cluttered?

Note: If anyone knows the technical name for this type of dispenser, please let us know.

    Dear readers,

There was a comment added to this article that was totally unacceptable in its nature. It was rude, offensive and disparaging to Ray, who has done a tremendous job keeping fresh content on this site. I have deleted the comment.

In general, we at SheepsheadBites.com are reluctant to delete comments. We believe it’s important for a free and honest exchange of ideas and opinions. But comments that serve only to insult and offend, without adding even the slightest bit to the debate, will be deleted.

Up to now, no comments (other than spam) have been deleted from the site, and we do not have a comment policy. So far we’ve left the community to police itself, and it has worked. Hopefully it will continue to work in the future, and this one visitor will be remain the exception for as long as we continue to post.

If you have any questions or comments about our decision, feel free to write me at nberke [at] sheepsheadbites.com.

    Thanks,

They have been called news kiosks. Though a news kiosk is traditionally what we call a newstand.

I suspect that in this economic climate a number of these publishers will be hard pressed to get enough advertising to justify the multitude of market segmented throwaways.

I’ve noticed that the Bay News has recently gone this route. The Kings Courier has been free for some time (this was started before News Corp. bought the chain) Perhaps The New York Post will be free too soon.
