This picture of a picture of a Don’t Litter sign was taken in the vicinity of East 19 Street between Avenue X and Avenue W.

The Sheepshead Bay resident who posted these signs took some effort to use photo quality print paper. He or she added color with a red permanent marker, thus qualifying the sign as a work of art. Then, the pictures of the “Don’t Litter Please” sign were stapled about seven feet high on several wooden street poles.

Years ago, these same streets were so clean and pretty. Now, the Department of Sanitation can’t seem to supply enough signs reminding polluting people that littering is not welcome.

Why do people feel so free to throw things on the street?

The big problem with all the litter is definatley lack of trash cans… I mean they are here and there but most of the time there is no can insight. I am a dog owner and my issue isn’t picking it up but having to carry it to my house when i may be a couple of blocks away. then if i try placing it into a private receptacle i get angry comments for doing so, perhaps a little more is required from the Department of Sanitation.

Besides the obvious littering problem, I think it’s bothersome (yet admirable) that a resident has to take it upon his or her self to post a sign in the name of the Dept. of Sanitation. Shouldn’t they be furnishing professionally made signs as well as trash cans? It’s great that somebody cares enough about their community to mount the sign but the city-run department in charge of this stuff needs to take responsibility and do their job.

I know the owner of the house that posted the sign. I park under it everyday. Other drivers and people would leave trash in his driveway and the poor man was getting lots of sanitation tickets. At one point there was another sign asking people not to leave needles on the ground and gutter. Someone tore the sign down recently it’s gone now.
